Beat down als : Music, mayham, making a difference // 4.1.16

Beat Down ALS was a benefit concert in honor of Amin Aur to raise funds to benefit ALS Research, a disease he had just passed away from in 2013. This was the second event in his honor, the first being held right before his death. His daughters, Caroline & Catherine Aur, wanted to continue to honor his memory and asked us to help them reach their goal of $10,000, up from the $6,000 they had raised in 2013.
ALS is also commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, after the Yankee's hall of famer, who was diagnosed with the disease in 1939. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain & the spinal cord. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons that reach from the brain to the spinal cord & beyond eventually lead those with the disease to their death. The disease was first found in 1869, but the diagnosis for Lou Gehrig, brought both national and international attention to the disease. The disease and research for the cure of it also gained attention in 2014 with the Ice Bucket Challenge.
The event included three different bands playing- Harumph, Helen Kelter Skelter, & My So Called Band- who all donated their time to make the event happen. Tickets were sold at the door for $10 a piece, along with both t-shirt sales before and during the event, a raffle & 15% of proceeds from sales at The Brewhouse going to the final total.
Prior to the event, we also started and managed a GoFundMe account to both get people excited for the event and allow anyone to donate that would not be able to attend.
We were not only able to meet the goal of $10,000, but were able to surpass it with a final total of $13,300. All proceeds benefited the ALS Association and the Muscular Dystrophy Association to helming pound research in hopes of one day finding a cure for ALS.

The benefit concert was hosted at The Brewhouse in Norman, with The Good Life Dining Group, not only donating the space, but also donating a portion of the proceeds from alcohol sales.

To help raise money, t-shirts with the Air Force badge and a #ManoftheAur were made to honor Amin & his career as a Air Force Pilot. The back of the shirt hosted all of the wonderful sponsors that helped make the event possible. The shirts were donated by a local Norman business, FishWater Tees.
